The final selection of artworks was as impressive as it was diverse: glass creations so delicate that one would almost hesitate to approach them, intricately decorated ceramics that immediately catch the eye, hats that transport us into an imaginary and fantastical world, wooden sculptures highlighting the harmony between nature and design, and much more.

As this year’s guest of honour, we were extremely proud to represent Luxembourg at the Paris biennial through such exceptional talent and craftsmanship. The artworks reflect the richness of our country’s craftsmanship and artistic scene, with a wide variety of materials offering endless creative possibilities. Through their individual personalities, talents and mastery of their craft, each artist has developed a distinctive style that enriches the exhibition. The collection draws inspiration from history, nature and science.

In ceramics, we discover prehistoric textures in the works of Doris Becker, Scandinavian design influences in the creations of Marianne Steinmetzer and Roxanne Flick, marine inspirations in the works of Ellen van der Woude, fine jewellery techniques in the creations of Léa Schroeder, and innovative features in the works of Catherine Grace Landman.

In jewellery, the eggshells used by Kim-Jung Vu evoke Renaissance mosaics, while the jewellery created by Claude Schmitz, featuring beautiful, precisely cut gemstones, forms miniature works of contemporary art.

Our three glassmaking studios each use their chosen material to develop a distinctive artistic identity: Pascale Seil’ssculptures are playful and uplifting, Camille Jacobs’ vases combine minimalist design with colours and variations in pattern, while the duo Anne-Claude Jeitz and Alain Calliste push the boundaries of glassmaking to fascinating extremes.

The sculptures of Tom Flick, whether carved from stone or alabaster, display remarkable fluidity, much like the wooden sculptures of Wouter van der Vlugt, with their mathematical approach to design. Jean-Paul Thiefels’ harmonious works in natural or crafted wood invite contemplation of yin and yang, while Katarzyna Kot-Bach captures the essence of materials in transformation through her sculptures.

The imagination of milliner Sandy Kahlich shines through her hats. Marie-Isabelle Callier’s painted panels evoke traditional Japanese shoji paper screens. Carine Mertes’ felt vases combine the softness of the material with the elegance of modern design. Fashion designer Ezri Kahn proudly represents our haute couture tradition with his elegant and sumptuous dresses.

Ultimately, we are here not only to represent our country but also to immerse ourselves in the vitality of fine craftsmanship. Révélations celebrates craftsmanship on an international scale, highlighting the importance of preserving these exceptional skills and trades.

Practical Information

DATES: Thursday, 23 May to Sunday, 26 May 2019, beneath the glass roof of the Grand Palais

VENUE: Grand Palais, 3 Avenue du Général Eisenhower, 75008 Paris

(Metro: Champs-Élysées–Clémenceau / Franklin D.
