Our Collection at Révélations 2019

08/05/2019

With 3 weeks left until the kick-off of the Révélations 2019 biennale, the preparations on the Luxembourgish side are in full motion. The final selection of artworks is as impressive as it is diverse; glasswork so intricate one would almost not dare step too close to it, ceramics with such detailed decorations that draw people in to take a better look, hats that transport us into a world of fantasy and imagination, woodwork showcasing the harmony between nature and design, and so much more.

As country of honor this year, we are very proud to represent Luxembourg with such talent and high expertise at the biennale in Paris. The works symbolize the art and craft scene of our country, a diverse array of materials allow the creative possibilities to be endless. Through a touch of personality, skill, and perspective, artists differentiate their works from other artists and develop an individual style that ultimately becomes their trademark. In the collection, one can see distinct references to history, nature or science.

In the ceramics we can see prehistoric textures in the works of Doris Becker, Scandinavian design in the works of Marianne Steinmetzer or Roxanne Flick, marine influences in the works of Ellen van der Woude, high jewelry techniques in the works of Lea Schroeder, evolutionary characteristics in the works of Catherine Grace Landman, and purist functionality in the works of Sarah Meyers and Laura Fugmann.

For jewellery, Kim-jung Vu’s use of egg shells in her work is similar to the eggshell mosaics of the Renaissance period. Claude Schmitz on the other hand creates jewelry with large, clean cut precious stones that each result in small modern pieces of art.

Our three glass craftsmen use their base material to create a typical style; Pascale Seil’s sculptures are playful and spark joy, Camille Jacobs’s vases combine minimalistic design with colors and patterns, and the duo Anne-Claude Jeitz and Alain Calliste push glass to the extreme through their eye-catching works.

Tom Flick’s sculptures, though made from stone are very fluid. A style similarly found in Wouter van der Vlugt’s wood sculptures along with a sense of mathematical design. On the other hand, the harmonious natural and manipulated wood works of Jean-Paul Thiefels resemble a yin-yang philosophy. Another woodworker, Katarzyna Kot-Bach captures the essence of the material with orbicular carvings.

The more one-of-a-kind craftsmen, who are the only ones representing their field of material, supply us with unique works. Hat maker Sandy Kahlich’s imagination shines through her hats, each more wondrous than the one before, Marie-Isabelle Callier’s painted room dividers reference the paper shoji screens of Japan. The felt vases of Carine Mertes combine the softness of the material with the sleekness of modern design and the reputation of haute-couture is easily held up by Ezri Kahn’s elegant and lavish dresses.

These are only an indication of the individual styles and expertise levels to see in the collection. We invite anyone to visit the biennale at the Grand Palais in Paris to really see every piece and experience the level of craftsmanship of Luxembourg. Evidently, not only are we there to represent our own country but also to see the other international collections at the biennale. The Salon Revelations is an accumulation of the art and craft realm globally, and emphasizes the importance of preservation of these trades.
