Laurent Turping

Turping Laurent is a Luxembourg wood sculptor passionate with this material. He has been practicing wood sculpture as a hobby since 2012. In 2013, he took a practical course in Germany at the "Kunst- und Werkhof Großropperhausen" alongside the artist Ernst Gross, where he perfected his wood sculpting technique with a chainsaw. He has exhibited in various inividual and group exhibitions, including the Strassen Biennial in 2015, Galerie Schlassgoard in Esch-sur-Alzette in 2021 and Reuter-Bausch Art Gallery in Luxembourg City in 2022, to name a few.

Laurent Turping's works reflect the ties that bind us together as a community, through representations of humans. Turping sculpts mainly with a chainsaw, letting himself be guided by the natural shape of the tree trunk, its cracks and knots which are integrated into the sculptures. Often left in its natural state, wood reminds us of our wrinkles and our evolution.

For this biennial exhibition, the artist is using only fallen tree trunks from our local forests to address the theme of immigration caused by rising sea levels, a consequence of global warming.
