Sophie Meyer

Sophie Meyer, born 1989 in Luxembourg, graduated in 2015 from the University of Applied Science and Arts in Hannover, Germany, with a Bachelor in Costume Design. AMerwards she conNnued her studies in London, where she gained her Master’s degree in Costume Design for Performance from the London College of Fashion. Alongside her studies, she worked in Theatre and Film in Luxembourg, Germany and England.

Since 2019, she works as a Costume Designer in Luxembourg and creates wearable art pieces. In her exploration for new techniques to create her own textures, Sophie chooses more and more unconventional and manipulated materials to involve her costumes in a creative dialogue between traditional craftssmanship and alternative methods and materials. Sustainability in her work is a matter close to her heart and defines her design process. Most of her artistic work involves up-cycling old, discarded or leftover fabrics and other materials. She finds most of her inspiration in her surroundings or in the material itself to create unique pieces of wearable art.

Sophie combines her training in historical pattern and garment making with modern materials and modern values. She often lets the materials guide the design of the garment, and uses a variety of techniques ranging from intricate embroidery and beading to more freely and experimental techniques from all over the world.
