Satoshi Okamoto

Okamoto Satoshi is a young Japanese glass designer born in Tokyo who has been living and working in France since 2003. Okamoto Satoshi learnt to handle the cane, from 1998 to 2001. He followed a training at the Meisei University in Japan. After obtaining a degree in glass art, he assisted the Japanese master glass artist Ito Kenji for two years. He then moved to France to deepen his knowledge of art, develop his creativity and exhibit his work in Europe. In 2008, Satoshi decided to set up his workshop in Reuilly in the heart of Berry. Satoshi creates sculptures of various shapes using glass melted at more than 1150 degrees. Thanks to the use of original materials, his work shows a contrast between the rough matte opacity and the smooth shiny transparency. Satoshi has become a master of the superimposition technique that he invented. It consists in alternating thick sheets of silver with layers of powdered coloured glass. After annealing in the kiln for up to ten days, he cuts certain areas with a diamond, revealing the successive layers when polished, revealing rings of several coloured areas. This technique was inspired by woodworking, which reveals the tree's growth rings.
