Maggy Backes, a plant dye artist based in Luxembourg, has been developing her expertise in dye plants for over twenty years. Trained by international masters, she combines ancestral knowledge with contemporary research in natural dyeing techniques on textiles and paper. It is a slow and precise process that involves observation, collection, drying, grinding, infusion in a hot water bath to extract the dyes, with mordanting being the first step. For the 2025 De Mains De Maîtres Biennale, she presents two textile paintings made from linen, dyed with local plants and pigments extracted from roots, leaves and mushrooms. The first highlights the deep red of madder, while the second evokes the cycle of life through the dyeing polypore, a fungus that decomposes the rotting roots of conifers, aiding their regeneration. Each piece is mounted on a frame and enriched with textures created through pleating, embroidery, or sewing, incorporating pigments from the exhausted dye baths. A slow and poetic process that makes the invisible visible— light, transformation, and plant memory—thus embodying Nature singulière.
