Marie De Decker, an artist of Flemish and Fulani origin, born in Montmartre in 1988, lives and works in Luxembourg. She creates sculptural works using innovative biomaterials, enhanced by gilding that goes beyond the purely ornamental. For Nature singulière, she presents Linceul, a 4-meter-long sculpture made from a bio-based thread derived from mother-of-pearl and fishing nets collected on beaches by the artist. Woven, shaped, and gilded with 24-carat gold, Marie questions this material that has spent time in the ocean, which has “seen” far more marine creatures and aquatic flora than any human being. She gives it a voice and makes it bear witness to the beauty of the oceans. The work evokes cells, currents, life sustained or torn away, unfolding like a thread that rises and then fades away. The feather and scale motifs, traced spontaneously thanks to the “intelligence of the gesture,” form a perpetual movement, without beginning or end, like an allegory of existence. Collected in Mauritius, where the artist spends part of the year, these fibers are frozen in gold. They shine naturally thanks to a unique technique, without varnish or lacquer. With this work, Marie De Decker pushes the boundaries of craftsmanship beyond traditional limits, even exploring space to question our connection to the sacred and the eternal.
