Carine Mertes, a Luxembourg-based felt artist,has been exploring the limitless creative potential of handcrafted wool felting for over two decades. Trained in Germany by international experts, she has developed a refined and contemporary approach to this age-old technique in her workshop in Dudelange—working with a material that pre-dates even the invention of weaving. For De Mains de Maîtres, she presents three works of varying structure and texture: a dense, sculptural object reminiscent of a vase; a relief wall piece; and a fluid, soft fashion accessory in the form of a shawl. These pieces honour the unique character of wool—a living, timeless, and renewable material deeply interwoven with human history. Carine Mertes works with various types of wools—including merino and alpaca—which she hand-dyes and blends with natural fibres like silk, linen, and even paper. The felting process, carried out by hand using hot water and soap, is a slow act of transformation that gradually reveals the material’s texture and form. Through this artistic practice—at the intersection of textile art and sculpture—the material is elevated for its resilience and poetic potential. Felt, often overlooked, is here restored to its rightful place as a noble, expressive medium.
