Christiane Modert, a Luxembourg-based ceramic artist trained in Fine Arts at the Sorbonne, develops a body of work in which materials serve as the language of nature. Nature surprises us through its juxtaposition of contrasting elements, which the artist interprets by experimenting with combinations of ceramics and paper. The process begins with two symmetrical bases created using columbines—a primitive pottery technique—upon on which the form takes shape. For the 2025 De Mains De Maîtres Biennale, Christiane Modert presents sculptures composed of two symmetrical forms modelled using columbines, which, once assembled, give rise to unexpected, almost organic volumes. This method, rooted in verticality and balance, evokes the interpenetration of solid and subtle realms—a metaphor for natural genesis. In another piece, a large, light, and translucent paper form emerges from the edges of a ceramic structure, creating a contrast between density and lightness, opacity and transparency. Each piece is an exploration of gravity, texture, and formal spontaneity. By allowing the material to guide her gestures through an intuitive and sensitive approach, Christiane Modert creates a Nature singulière.
