Biography

Rick & Erik Stein, a father-and-son duo from Luxembourg engaged in a dialogue between music and craftsmanship, combine their skills to create unique handmade drums. The father is a master carpenter and woodturner, while the son is a musician and professional drummer with a degree in polyrhythm. Together, they combine their expertise in their workshop in Fischbach (LU), which specialises in handcrafting snare drums using wood sourced exclusively from the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall. Their artistic approach—based on the reuse and transformation of neglected wood scraps— meets ethical, sustainable, functional, and aesthetic criteria. The metal components and leather are produced by local artisans. Two models illustrate this approach: the smoked oak snare, in which the wood reveals a dark hue upon contact with metal, and the tuttifrutti snare, made from strips of various wood types assembled in no particular order—creating unique and colourful pieces. Each instrument is the result of a rigorous craft process—cutting, planing, milling, pressure bonding, and turning— which enhances the material while reducing waste, embodying the theme of Nature singulière.
