Laurent Turping, a self-taught sculptor from Luxembourg active since 2012, approaches woodworking instinctively. He is less concerned with the final object than with the creative process—the pleasure of manual labour, combined with a connection to nature and the harmony between humans and their environment. Trained in chainsaw sculpture in Germany, he favours a direct, sensory relationship with the material—using local tree species, which he carves while respecting their natural shapes, knots, and cracks. His raw, free movements follow the lines of the wood without constraining them—revealing its intrinsic beauty and giving rise to anthropomorphic forms. Some works are left outdoors, where the elements continue their work—accentuating the marks of time and enriching the material. The powerful yet meditative sculptures presented at the 2025 De Mains De Maîtres Biennale bear witness to a silent dialogue between wood and the artist Laurent Turping—who is fascinated by the imperfection of living things and their perpetual rebirth through artistic transformation, intimately faithful to dialogue.
