Biography

Olivier Weis, a Luxembourg-based designer of luxury leather goods and founder of the Van Weis brand, explores the boundaries between traditional craftsmanship, minimalist design, and sustainable innovation. Olivier honed his skills in Zurich, where he specialised in the demanding craft of saddlery—including the technique of free-hand leather cutting. Each of his pieces, entirely handmade in his own workshop—where every detail counts—embodies a new definition of luxury: understated, sensory, and respectful of resources—vehicles for stories. In his sculptural handbag design for De Mains De Maîtres 2025, he uses an innovative textile made from mycelium—the root network of fungi—a pioneering material in its own right, combined with vegetable-tanned leather to ensure stability and durability. Inspired by natural microstructures, lamellae, and folds, the fluid shape of the bag is achieved through wet moulding on custom-made templates—combining classic saddlery techniques and digital processes such as CNC milling and 3D printing. By incorporating the organic properties of the material and ecological awareness, Olivier Weis offers a truly unique work of art.
