Tom Flick, sculptor born in 1968 in Luxembourg, trained at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna. He co-founded the Sixthfloor collective in Koerich in 2001 and has been teaching at the Lycée des Arts et Métiers in Luxembourg since 1998. Working in the tradition of direct carving, he maintains an almost physical relationship with stone—particularly alabaster—for its whiteness, translucency, and inner life, revealed with just a ray of light. In Nature singulière, his sculpture is conceived as a dialogue between raw material and the identity it conceals. The stone, drawn from the bowels of the earth, becomes a fragment of nature transfigured under his hands. The work, sometimes smooth, sometimes marked by the tool, is a subtle union of the organic and the geometric, of sensual curves and sharp angles, of softness and tension, of vertical and horizontal forces. His plastic grammar is neither abstract nor figurative. Guided by nature, current events, and philosophy—even metaphysics—Tom Flick creates autonomous works animated by a silent movement: grounded, emotional, playful, and open to contemplation. What emerges is the mineral memory of the world.
