Florence Hoffmann, a French-Luxembourgish visual artist born in 1966, has been exploring the metamorphoses of matter for nearly thirty years. A graduate of the Ecole Supérieure d’Arts Graphiques Met de Penninghen in Paris, she has developed a sculptural and installation-based practice shaped by human and societal concerns. For the De Mains De Maîtres Biennale, she presents the series Homo Libri, ce que je lis me construit (“what I read builds me”), in which books are transformed into unique, dynamic organisms. Superimposed, weathered and gilded, they come together to form hybrid bodies that embody an ever-evolving human nature. Each cross-section evokes a layer of memory—a sedimentation of knowledge and emotion. Her technique combines plaster, pigments, iron and wood in a poetic and purpose-driv- en approach to upcycling. By transforming the printed object into a living sculpture—at once vegetal and mineral—Florence questions our identity shaped by culture, while emphasising the porous boundary between thought and life, a relationship that is constantly reinventing itself. Through this alchemy of matter and narrative, Florence Hoffmann offers a vision of our world that is both sensitive and singular—celebrating transformation, plasticity, connection, trace and promise.
