Sandy Kahlich, a German-born milliner, has been practising the art of hat-making for over twenty-five years. Trained in Bavaria and enriched by experience in Austria, she moved to Luxembourg in 2004, where she now runs the Modes Nita workshop. Using traditional techniques, she transforms raw materials such as felt, straw, and feathers into uniquely crafted and hand-dyed creations. For Nature singulière, she presents Federella, a hat with a sinamay base — woven straw — dyed green to evoke the forest. It is adorned with shimmering swirls of hand-coloured, locally sourced turkey feathers. The triangular shape echoes the essential forms of natural balance. The poetry of texture, and the transformation of simple, recycled materials into objects of grace and character through precise cutting and assembly, enchant the viewer with their symbolic and sensory depth—while also raising awareness of eco-responsibility. Her work, shown at multiple editions of the De Mains De Maîtres Biennale, is as singular as life itself—paying tribute to the fragile beauty of our environment while merging innovative millinery techniques with a strong commitment to sustainable craftsmanship.
