Rafael Springer, an unconventional Luxembourgish visual artist and ceramist, has been developing a body of work shaped by hybridity and memory for over forty years. Winner of the Pierre Werner Prize (2002) and the Strassen Biennial of Contemporary Art (2011), he combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques in a multi- disciplinary approach that integrates painting, sculpture, ceramics, and digital media. His artistic universe—both personal and universal—explores notions of perception and emotion through immersive installations featuring bold colours and complex textures, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur. For the 2025 De Mains De Maîtres Biennale, he presents experimental ceramics made from local tree leaves and branches dipped in liquid clay and then fired—revealing fossilised imprints of ephemeral nature. This particular technique, which he describes as ‘vegan and local’, questions our connection to living beings and matter, while fully embracing the theme of Nature singulière through its ability to preserve a natural moment in a lasting, poetic form—deeply rooted in place.
