Marianne Steinmetzer, a Luxembourgish ceramist based in Bridel, left the business world to devote herself to porcelain—her preferred material— whose bisque-like, unglazed appearance particularly appeals to her. Trained in throwing and moulding through internation- al internships and masterclasses, she has developed a delicate practice that combines functionality with playful aesthetics. In keeping with the theme of Nature singulière, she presents Le jardin d’Alice (Alice’s Garden), a series of bisque porcelain pieces inspired by an imaginary garden—a nod to the dreamlike world of Alice in Wonderland, symbolising the carefree nature of childhood. Her floral forms, deliberately fantastical rather than naturalistic, evoke a soothing and poetic world. Each piece is moulded, assembled, coated with a slip made from coloured pigments, then decorated with a brush or stencil, eroded to give relief to the pattern, and finally being sanded and fired at a high temperature. With these objects—both sculptures and containers—that sublimate the flower as a symbol of gentleness and reverie, Steinmetzer offers a comforting vision of nature as a refuge from contemporary turmoil.
